A Visit to Chihuly Garden & Glass in Seattle

I spent several hours photographing at the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit in Seattle last summer. As I explored the incredible art created by Dale Chihuly, I found myself creating some abstract photos showing just parts of an installation rather than trying to capture an entire installation. I though I’d share a few of my photos of Chihuly’s incredible glass with you today.

I’m back from a trip to Seattle, Washington and Victoria, British Columbia. I spent much of  my time photographing flowers – at botanical gardens, at the market and as I walked around town. And of course I found lots of other things to photograph as well. I thought I’d share a few of my photos from the trip with you today.

I’ve recently added a new photo – View from Steptoe Butte  – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

In July I made my first visit to the Palouse region of Washington state. Over the years, I’ve seen many photos of the farms and fields in the region highlighting the contrasting colors between the wheat and other crops growing on the farms. But it wasn’t until I got there and saw how large the area is and for how many miles some of the fields seem to stretch on for that I began to understand the scope of the agricultural industry in that part of the state – and the incredible beauty of the farms. One of my favorite places to photograph the fields in the Palouse is from the top of Steptoe Butte. Located in Steptoe Butte State Park, the butte rises about 1000 feet over the surrounding landscape, providing photographers and others a 360 degree view of the fields in the area. During my few days in the region, I photographed from the top of the butte several times – this was my favorite photo – showing the vastness of the fields with a farm giving a sense of scale, and the varying shades of green, yellow, gold and brown in the fields. I had a wonderful photographing in the Palouse – and hope to return there soon.

View from Steptoe Butte is available as a matted print on my website.

I’ve recently added a new photo – Farm in the Palouse  – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

I photographed this scene from the side of one of many farm roads in the region. I loved the contrasting colors and shapes of the green, gold and brown fields — with the farm building nestled in a small valley among the hills. And then there was the magnificent blue sky with the white puffy clouds that made the scene look like it came out of an idyllic painting of an farm. But the scene was real – and I’m really glad I had a chance to photograph it this summer.

Farm in the Palouse is available as a matted print on my website.

Abstract Images Found on Cars

Abstract Images Found on Cars

A few weeks ago I shared some abstract photos I took in the town of Palouse, Washington during a workshop with Art Wolfe. Later in the afternoon of the same day that I took those photos, we ended up photographing on a farm with about 25 old cars and trucks – and our assignment was once again to photograph abstracts. We were looking for the contrast of lights and darks, shapes and anything else that caught our eye.

Looking back at my photos from that afternoon – they seem to be split into two categories – patterns and shapes I saw in the car and truck windows or in the paint.

There were bubbles in the glass of some of the windows. In this first image – the bubbles reminded me of a line of people dancing

In this next image – they reminded me of the leaves of a plant – as I edited this one I changed the colors from the original to blues and purples. That’s one of the fun things about editing abstracts – there are no wrong or unreal colors 🙂

Bubbles and cracks that reminded me of cracks in the ice on the pond where I skated as a kid

And two bullet holes that reminded me of an owl’s eyes.

And then in  paint – I saw rivers and mountains – a landscape seen from above

And finally two that reminded me of some of the abstract paintings Art Wolfe had shared with us during his lecture that morning

I’m not likely to see out other yards full of old cars – but if I ever come across one again – I’ve got some idea of what to look for if I want to photograph something a little different.

Photos from the Road: The Palouse

Last week I shared some of my photos taken from Steptoe Butte in the Palouse region of Washington State. Today, I thought I’d share some of my other photos from the region. Most of these were taken from the side of the road. I spent days driving the roads looking for just the perfect field or barn, or tree to photograph. I fell in the love with the region – hope to head back again to explore and photograph some more.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the area
