Abstract Photos from Old Car City

A couple weeks ago I shared a few of my favorite photos from my visit to Old Car City in White, Georgia in my newsletter and here on my blog. I thought I’d share the whole set of my photos from that shoot here with you today.

I visited Old Car City during Art Wolfe’s Abstract Atlanta workshop. After spending the morning talking about abstract art and how to see potential abstract photos in the field, Art took us to Old Car City in White Georgia. Imagine visiting a place with 4500 old cars hidden on  6 miles of trails with the assignment of creating abstract photographs that someone looking at them wouldn’t know they were a photograph of a car!

Here’s what I came away with . . .   I think you’ll agree – this is one of the more unusual sets of photos I’ve shared here on my blog.

Abstract Atlanta

Abstract Atlanta

It wasn’t just the wonderful gardens that drew me to Atlanta a few weeks ago. While I was in Atlanta, I attended Art Wolfe’s Abstract Atlanta workshop. I had an incredible time at the workshop. During the lectures, we looked at various elements of abstract art and the work of many abstract expressionist painters – and considered how we could incoporate these ideas into our photographs. And then we headed out to photograph.

The first place we visited was Old Car City in White, Georgia. Imagine visiting a place with 4500 old cars hidden on  6 miles of trails with the assignment of creating abstract photographs that someone looking at them wouldn’t know they were a photograph of a car!

Here are a few of my photos from Old Car City.

And then we headed to the Atlanta Prison Farm to photograph a graffiti-covered partially-burned abandoned prison. It’s the first time I’ve ever been on a photo shoot that required a police escort to visit the site, and where I could here the local S.W.A.T. team practicing in the distance. I never knew I could spend an afternoon fascinated by patterns, textures, lines and colors that I found in overlapping layers of chipping paint and rust!

As you can see, Art Wolfe took us to only the best locations for this type of photography!

In some ways, this was one of the most photographically challenging workshops I have ever attended. I was photographing subjects way outside of my comfort zone, in places i could not have imagined photographing. And I am so glad I went. I’m not sure if I’ll do much more photographing in abandoned places – but I can see how I’ll be thinking about the concepts I learned as I’m photographing flowers and landscapes!

Beautiful Flowers in Atlanta

Beautiful Flowers in Atlanta

Before I get to this week’s newsletter, I wanted to share some exciting news about an upcoming show of my photographs. I’ll have several photographs in a group show “La Primavera” at the Meeting House Gallery in Columbia, Maryland. The show will be on display from May 5 – July 28. The opening reception will be Sunday May 6 from 12:30 – 2:30 pm. I’ll be sharing more information about the show as it gets closer.

And now for this week’s newsletter . . .

I’ve just returned from a wonderful photography trip to the Atlanta area. I spent several days photographing flowers at local gardens and I thought I’d share a few of the photos with you today.

I photographed azaleas and spring wildflowers at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain

Graveyard Angel Bonaventure Cemetery Savannah Palladium Toned Kallitype

I’m excited to share another of my palladium-toned kallitypes with you

One of the amazing graveyard angels at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia.

This photograph is printed using the late 19th-century photographing printing process known as Kallityping. The emulsion is hand-painted onto the paper, exposed with a negative under bright lights, and toned with palladium. Each print from a negative is slightly different – so these are one of a kind images.

The photographs are printed on 8 X 10″ Bergger 100% Cotton Cot 320 paper. They are matted to 11 X 14″ in a white acid-free mat.

Grave of Gracie Watson at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. Gracie’s parents, W.J. and Frances Watson came to Savannah to manage the Pulaski Hotel in Savannah. Their daughter Gracie, born in 1883, was dearly loved by her parents, and charmed many guests at the hotel. A few days before Easter in 1889, Gracie died of pneumonia. Her heart-broken parents commissioned John Walz to sculpt a life-size monument for her grave.
