Marvelous March Morning at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Marvelous March Morning at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Last week I spent a marvelous morning photographing at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia. I don’t get to Lewis Ginter as often as I’d like to (something about all the traffic on I-95) but when I do – I always have a wonderful time. Spring flowers bloom at least a week earlier in Richmond than they do in DC – so a trip in early March means I get to see and photograph spring flowers a little earlier than I would if I just stayed at home.

Here are a few of my photos from Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens from last week

And in the conservatory I found a wonderful Leopard Prince Phalaeonopsis Orchid to photograph

Now that spring seems to finally be arriving in the DC area – I’ll be out photographing locally more often. And I’ll admit – I’m ready to be out photographing on a more regular basis 🙂

A Few Dendrobium Orchids

A Few Dendrobium Orchids

Over the years I’ve photographed a number of orchids labeled as Dendrobium Orchids. Since I can’t tell one orchid from the next – I’m assuming that they were labelled correctly at the botanical gardens I photographed them at. If anyone can positively identify any of these orchids as being something other than a dendrobium  orchid – I’d appreciate it if you could let me know.

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing these dendrobium orchid photos – I’m sure I’ll be posting more orchid photos soon as I work my way through my backlog of unedited photos.

More Paphiopedilum Orchids

More Paphiopedilum Orchids

The Paphiopedilum orchids are frequently referred to as the slipper orchids due to the pouch which can look like a lady’s slipper. They are originally native to portions of Asia including India and much of Southest Asia. There are hundreds of types of paphiopedilum orchids – native, cultivated and hybrids. Usually when I see them at botanical gardens they aren’t identified by name – so most of photos are just labeled paphiopedilum orchid. If you happen to recognize any of them – I’d love to hear what variety they are.

Here are a few more of the paphiopedilum orchids I’ve photographed in recent years.

Paphiopedilum Orchids

Paphiopedilum Orchids

It’s late January – which means it’s time for me to start planning a trip up to Longwood Gardens to see their annual Orchid Extravaganza. And as I was figuring out when to go – I realized I have lots of orchids photos I’ve never shared with you. So I thought I’d start sharing them today – starting with some paphiopedilum orchids.

I realized that once again I’ve gotten way behind in editing and sharing some of the orchid photos I’ve taken. I’m not sure why I keep falling behind on these – but here’s a start on catching up.
