As I’ve been looking over some of the photos I haven’t posted to my blog, I realized that there are several bearded iris photos that you may not have seen. I’ve photographed several wonderful varieties of bearded irises in recent years – they are one of my favorite spring flowers.

According to several websites, bearded irises are fairly easy to grow. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil. With the wide variety of bearded irises available, you can find them in almost every color of the rainbow. The one color that seems to elude iris breeders is a true red bearded iris.

Every spring one of my favorite flowers to photograph at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland are the irises. This year was no different. In addition to the Snake’s Head Iris that I wrote about in April, I’ve photographed several other lovely irises. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoyed photographing them.
In March, I photographed some early blooming Katherine Hodgekin Irises (iris histrioides). These adorable irises grow in a big cluster in one of the beds at Brookside every spring.

And then one day in late May I photographed several beautiful irises.
First is Beautiful Visions – a Tall Bearded Iris. In shades of rose, pink and peach – Beautiful Visions adds a spectacular splash of spring color to the garden

Next is Dorthea K Williamson Iris – a Louisiana Iris. This is the first Louisiana Iris I’ve photographed.

The final iris I photographed this year at Brookside Gardens was a lovely yellow siberian iris.

I photographed this incredible Tour de France Iris last spring. I just loved the combination of yellow, gold and white in the flower contrasting with the green leaves in the background. The iris was named after the Tour de France and the gold of the petals honors the yellow jersey worn by the leaders during the race.

I just photographed this iris a week ago at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland. I loved the contrast of the bright white and bold gold of the petals against the dark greens and reds of the leaves of other plants in the garden. Last week, I spent about an hour photographing Bearded Irises at Brookside Gardens – between the raindrops. The flowers were gorgeous, with great diffuse light provided by the cloudy sky. The only problem was – the occasional sprinkles that turned to a downpour.
Even with the weather – I came back with some wonderful photos of bearded irises.
The first cultivator I photographed was Monet’s Blue – the flowers are a lovely shade of light blue.

Then I found a wonderful deep purple iris to photograph – Grape Adventure.

Finally – Immortality – a white bearded Iris. I spent a fair amount of time with the Immortality Iris – I loved the play of shadows and light in the petals of the white flower.

I’m hoping to photograph more bearded irises in the next couple of weeks. They are one of my favorite late spring flowers.
