DC Area Flower Safari

If you are in the DC area, I hope you will join me and other flower lovers at our DC Flower Safari Meetups. The next Meetup is scheduled for Saturday, May 11th at Winterthur in Wilmington, DE.

Plan at this point for May 11 is to head to Winterthur in Wilmington, DE. Winterthur has gardens and a museum. Like Longwood Gardens – it’s an old duPont estate.

INformation about Winterthur is at http://www.winterthur.org/

Looks to be about a 2 hour drive from Bethesda to Winterthur. Let’s plan on carpooling from Grosvenor Metro Station. We’ll leave the Metro station at 7:30.

Admission to Winterthur is $ 18, which includes a tour of the mansion. For $ 30 you can reserve a place on a tour of the mansion at a specific time. If you belong to a botanical garden that participates in the American Horticultural Societies Recipricol Admission programs – your membership will get you into Winterthur for free.

DC Area Flower Safari

If you are in the DC area, I hope you will join me and other flower lovers at our DC Flower Safari Meetups. The next Meetup is scheduled for Sunday, April 6th at National Arboretum in Washington DC.

I finally have a location for this Saturday’s meetup. Due to the late spring – most of the usual places for early April don’t have much in bloom. So we’re heading to the National Arboretum in Washington DC.

Not sure exactly what we’ll find – hopefully some native plants in Fern Valley, some Cherry blossoms (they have more varieties than the Tidal Basin – so usually a longer bloom period), and a few magnolias. I’m sure there are some daffodils blooming somewhere in the Arboretum . . .

According to the What’s Blooming page – the first week in April we can likely see ” Daffodils, crocuses, early magnolias, Korean azalea, Japanese-andromeda, forsythias, cornelian-cherries, woodland wildflowers, epimediums, flowering cherries, arisaemas” – http://www.usna.usda.gov/Education/blooming.html

Plan for the meetup is to enter the Arboretum from the R Street entrance at 8 AM when it opens – and then meet in the parking lot. It would be great if we can consolidate the group into fewer cars in the parking lot – there is limited parking in many areas of the Arboretum.

From there – best suggestion will be to just head off and explore. My plan is to head towards the Cherry Trees and Asia Garden – and then back to Fern Valley. Since Fern Valley is in the woods – it’s easier to photograph later in the morning there than in other parts of the garden

We’ll meet back at the parking lot at 10 AM and head to the Dunkin Donuts at 2420 New York Avenue for coffee (it’s just around the corner from the Arboretum).

DC Area Flower Safari

If you are in the DC area, I hope you will join me and other flower lovers at our DC Flower Safari Meetups. The next Meetup is scheduled for Sunday, April 6th at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, PA.

The plan at this point for April 6 is Brookside Gardens. However if Cherry Blossoms are looking good – or the bluebells at Bull Run are blooming – location very well may change in the few days before the meetup.

Meetup starting time will be either 7 or 7:30 – depending on where we’re photographing. Chances are we’ll head out for coffee at a local Starbucks or Panera afterwards.

Once I’ve got a better idea what will be blooming where – I’ll announce details.

DC Area Flower Safari

If you are in the DC area, I hope you will join me and other flower lovers at our DC Flower Safari Meetups. The next Meetup is scheduled for Sunday, March 17th at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. The Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens is always amazing. It’s one of my favorite times of the year to visit Longwood.

Info is at http://www.longwoodgardens.org/OrchidExtravaganza.html

Plan for this meetup is to meet at 6:30 AM at the Grosvenor Metro Station. Then we can carpool to Longwood. It takes just over 2 hours to get there. My suggestion would be that we plan on photographing in the Conservatory in the morning – then meet for lunch at 11:30 in the restaurant. After that – depending on what people what to do – either keep shooting – or head on back.

Garden admission is $18. You can purchase a ticket online at or you can get one when we get there. I doubt there will be problems getting tickets at the door on a Sunday morning for Orchid Extravaganza. But if you want to make sure you get one – go ahead and purchase a an entry ticket for 9 AM on March 17th.
