Peonies at the New York Botanical Garden II

Without a doubt, one of the highlights of my May trip was seeing the peonies at the New York Botanical Garden! I had no idea that they had a peony collection at the NYBG, much less that the flowers would be in full bloom for my visit.

The peony collection is formally known as the Matelich Anniversary Peony Collection, which features more than 150 varieties of peonies. As early as 1916, peonies were on display at the NYBG. By the 1940’s there were many peonies planted near the conservatory. Eventually the peonies were moved to their current location along the Perennial Garden Way. It was most recently expanded in 2015 when it was doubled in size.

I’ll be sharing my peony photos from the NYBG in several posts this week and next week

In the Studio: Peonies

In the Studio: Peonies

Earlier this year I bought some wonderful peonies at my local farmer’s market and brought them into my studio to photograph. I found myself absolutely fascinated by all the curves, shapes and shadows in the flowers and petals. I thought I’d share some of my favorite peony photos from that shoot with you today.

Peonies!

Peonies!

Peonies are one of those flowers that you have to catch on just the right day to photograph them in a garden. Sometimes it seems like there’s just one or two days a year to capture the beauty of a specific peony bush. Fortunately for me, I managed to catch two sets of peonies at peak bloom this year. The first set are white and pink Ezra Pound peonies. And the second are a soft pink peony (no clue what variety). I hope you enjoy seeing my peony photos from earlier this spring.

I’ve recently added a new photo – White Peony – to my BeautifulFlowerPictures.com website.

Every spring I see peonies at the local gardens and in the past I’ve struggled to create images that capture the beauty of these flowers. When they bloom, the flowers are lush and fragrant. And then within a few days – start to droop and can look pretty ratty looking. This year I spotted some peonies at a local garden at just the right moment and was able to photograph this beautiful white peony. Some of the things I really liked about this flower was the little hints of red along the edge of a few petals – and the two unopened buds alongside the flower in full bloom.

White Peony is available as a matted print on my website.

Wonderful Peonies

Wonderful Peonies

In China, peonies are often referred to as the “King of Flowers” and when I see them in gardens in the spring I can certainly understand why. The lush blossoms, the fragrant scents, the beautiful green leaves make peonies the center of attention when they are blooming. Most other flowers fade into the background in a garden full of peonies.

I’ve photographed a number of peonies over the years – and thought I’d share some of my peony photos with you this morning.
