When I saw this miltonia orchid at a local garden, I was fascinated by the patterns created on the lip of the flowers. They reminded me of rivers and islands photographed from above.

Miltonia Orchids Up Close

Miltonia Orchids Up Close

I recently photographed some Miltonia Orchids at the Orchid Show at Longwood Gardens. I’ve always liked the shapes of the petals on the Miltonia Orchids. On the day I photographed these orchids I focused on the center of the orchids and the patterns and textures in the petals.

I hope you enjoy this close up look at some amazing Miltonia Orchids

A Few More Phalaenopsis Orchids

A Few More Phalaenopsis Orchids

As promised, here are the rest of the phalaenopsis orchid photos I’ve recently edited

Also known as Moth Orchids, phalaeonopsis orchids are among the most popular orchids. Through selective breeding and hybridization, orchid growers have developed moth orchids in incredible colors and patters.

A Few Phalaenopsis Orchids

A Few Phalaenopsis Orchids

I was going through my files and found several sets of Phalaeonopsis Orchid photos that I’ve never edited and shared. So I thought I’d share some of them with you today.

Also known as Moth Orchids, phalaeonopsis orchids are among the most popular orchids. Through selective breeding and hybridization, orchid growers have developed moth orchids in incredible colors and patters.

I’ve got a few more photos of Phalaenopsis orchids that I’ll share in another post soon.

2017 Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens

2017 Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens

I recently made my first trip to Longwood Gardens to see the 2017 Orchid Extravaganza. And once again – the show is amazing. This year there are over 4500 orchids on display. I only photographed a few of the flowers – mainly just was getting a sense of the show today. I’m planning at least two more trips up to Longwood to see the orchids between now and the end of March when the show closes. But I wanted to share a few photos with you today – just to give you a hint of the wonders of the show.

There are several large displays of orchids, including an orchid arch

Several orchid columns

I’m sure I’ll share more photos from the 2017 Orchid Extravaganza after my other visits to the show. But in the meantime, I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing these first few photos of the show.

More Orchids In A Tropical Clearing

More Orchids In A Tropical Clearing

For the past few years, Longwood Gardens has created some amazing miniature landscapes as part of their annual Orchid Extravaganza. In 2016, they designed a tropical clearing full of orchids. What they did was create streams, and meadows and fill them with orchid plants in various parts of the conservatory. It gave photographers a great chance to photograph some of the orchids in a semi-natural setting rather than just in a pot against a dark wall. So while the mini-landscapes weren’t realistic – they were great fun to photograph.

I shared some of my photos from the Tropical Clearing a few weeks ago – here are the rest of my photos from this year’s wonderful orchid display at Longwood Gardens.
