Last month while I was in Rochester, NY for a workshop, I spent a wonderful morning photographing at Mount Hope Cemetery. Founded in 1838, Mount Hope is a beautiful garden/rural cemetery full of wonderful statuary and stone carving. I thought I’d share some of my photos from Mount Hope Cemetery with you today.

I’d love to spend more time photographing at Mount Hope Cemetery. My guess is in spring, summer or fall, the foliage will give the cemetery a completely different look. And hopefully, if there isn’t snow on the ground, I’ll be able to photograph Frederick Douglas’s grave!

I’ve recently added a new palladium-toned kallitype – Weeping Graveyard Angel Metarie Cemetery New Orleans Palladium Toned Kallitype – to my website at https://beautifulflowerpictures.com/store/weepinggraveyardangelmetarie/
The beautiful weeping angel in the Chapman H Hyams family tomb in Metarie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana
This photograph is printed using the late 19th-century photographing printing process known as Kallityping. The emulsion is hand-painted onto the paper, exposed with a negative under bright lights, and toned with palladium. Each print from a negative is slightly different – so these are one of a kind images.
The photographs are printed on 8 X 10″ Bergger 100% Cotton Cot 320 paper. They are matted to 11 X 14″ in a white acid-free mat.
These one-of-a-kind kallitypes are available for $ 49.00

I’ve recently added a new Palladium Toned Kallitype to my website. It shows the monument on the Adams Memorial at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC. You can see it on my website at https://beautifulflowerpictures.com/store/dcgrief/
The Mystery of the Hereafter and The Peace of God that Passeth Understanding (more commonly known as Grief) is the best-known sculpture in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC. Henry Adams commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Stanford White to create the monument honoring his late wife Marion Hooper ‘Clover’ Adams after her death in 1885. Clover Adams became interested in photography in the early 1880s. Her work reflected the life of a late 19th century woman – portraits, still lifes and landscapes. She died after consuming potassium cyanide, one of the chemicals she used to develop her photographs.

As I’ve visited and photographed cemeteries, one thing that always stands out at cemeteries in New Orleans is the number and variety of things people leave at the graves. From flowers, to Mardi Gras beads, to old stuffed animals, you never quite know what you’ll see. These are some photos I took of items left behind at Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans’ Garden District on a visit in 2018 shortly after Mardi Gras.

Earlier this year, I spent a morning photographing at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1850, the cemetery is home to many famous Atlantans. It is another cemetery established as part of the rural or garden cemetery movement in the mid-1800s. So like other cemeteries of its era, Oakland is full of wonderful flowers, trees, and statuary on the graves.

Earlier this year I spent a wonderful morning exploring Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Established in 1836, Laurel Hill Cemetery is the second oldest rural cemetery in the United States. The cemetery is full on wonderful statuary. The condition of many of the statues surprised me. They have significantly more wear and damage than statues in other cemeteries I’ve visited. I don’t know if it is the age of the statues, the type of stone or the harsher weather than caused the damage.
I shared some of my photos from Laurel Hill Cemetery last week. Here are the remaining photos
