Last month while I was in Rochester, NY for a workshop, I spent a wonderful morning photographing at Mount Hope Cemetery. Founded in 1838, Mount Hope is a beautiful garden/rural cemetery full of wonderful statuary and stone carving. I thought I’d share some of my photos from Mount Hope Cemetery with you today.

I’d love to spend more time photographing at Mount Hope Cemetery. My guess is in spring, summer or fall, the foliage will give the cemetery a completely different look. And hopefully, if there isn’t snow on the ground, I’ll be able to photograph Frederick Douglas’s grave!

Earlier this year I spent a wonderful morning exploring Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Established in 1836, Laurel Hill Cemetery is the second oldest rural cemetery in the United States. The cemetery is full on wonderful statuary. The condition of many of the statues surprised me. They have significantly more wear and damage than statues in other cemeteries I’ve visited. I don’t know if it is the age of the statues, the type of stone or the harsher weather than caused the damage.
I shared some of my photos from Laurel Hill Cemetery last week. Here are the remaining photos

I recently spent a wonderful morning photographing at the Historic Old City Cemetery in Sacramento, California. Established in 1849, the cemetery is the home to many of the graves of the founders of the city and of many prominent California politicians. It is also filled with beautiful flowers and trees.
The cemetery has some wonderful statuary similar to what I’ve been photographing at rural cemeteries on the East Coast. The one difference – I didn’t find any angels at the Historic Old City Cemetery.
Here are a few of my favorite photos of statuary I found there

I spent a wonderful afternoon at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia last summer. Like many other cemeteries I’ve visited, it’s an older cemetery with all sorts of statuary. What surprised me at Blandford was the number of Cherubs I saw on graves rather than full grown angels. It was nice to see something a little different to photograph at a cemetery.
