One of the first flowers to bloom in the spring in the Washington, DC area is the Lenten Roses (helleborus orientalis and other hybrids). Lenten Roses are an early blooming, shade loving perennial that is hardy in zones 4-9. Members of the Buttercup Family (ranunculaceae). these downward facing flowers can be found in shades of white to pinks to deep marrons.

When I see the Lenten Roses blooming at local gardens, I know the other flowers aren’t far behind.
