Iris Germanica or German Irises are an iris hybrid developed in Europe. They can look very similar to the bearded irises – and are often labeled as bearded irises. These wonderful spring blooming irisis can grow to over three feet tall. The rhizomes spread easily so its not uncommon to see large patches of Iris Germanica.

I’ve photographed two different types of Iris Germanicas – Edith Wolford and Clarence.

Edith Wolford Irises are a stunning yellow and purple flower. Introduced in the 1986, this wonderful flower grows to 35″ tall.

Clarence is a lovely blueish purple and white iris. Introduced in 1991, it also grows to almost 3 feet tall.
