Beauty in the Gardens of Philadelphia

Beauty in the Gardens of Philadelphia

My students and I had a wonderful time photographing gardens in the Philadelphia area this month during my early May workshop. We visited six gardens in six days – everything from historic gardens to native plant gardens to pleasure gardens. I thought I’d share a few of my photos from the week with you today.

The first garden we visited was Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square. I’ve been visiting Longwood and until this year had never managed to see the wisteria in bloom. During the workshop, it was in full bloom and it was worth the wait.

Next we headed to Bartram’s Garden along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. In some ways Philadelphia’s great gardening tradition started with John Bartram in the mid-1700’s. The gardens at his home have been restored to showcase the types of plants he would have grown. On our visit, we found some spectacular late blooming Gloria Nigram tulips to photograph.

At Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Delaware, azaleas and rhododendrons were the stars of the garden during our visit.

The wildflower display at Mt. Cuba Center, also in Delaware, was amazing. There were so many different wildflowers in full bloom, the highlight for me were the Yellow Lady’s Slippers.

Chanticleer Garden in Wayne lived up to its reputation as a pleasure garden. Everywhere we looked, we saw and photographed beautiful combinations of flowers including beds with these allium and columbine.

We ended the week at Jenkins Arboretum in Devon. Once again, we found a garden where azaleas and rhododendrons were the highlights of the garden.

I’m still editing my photos from the workshop so it may be a while before you get a chance to see all the wonderful flowers I photographed. If you’d like to see my photos from the trip and other visits to gardens in the Philadelphia area, check out my Gardens of Philadelphia pinterest board. You’ll quickly see why Philadelphia is known as America’s Garden Capital.

Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens

I’ve had a few questions about some of the gardens we’ll be visiting during my Photographing the Gardens of Philadelphia workshop in May so I thought I’d share a bit about some of them.

Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is one of the premier botanical gardens in the United States. Located on the former estate of Pierre S. du Pont, Longwood Gardens opened to the public after du Pont’s death in 1954. Currently the estate covers over 1076 acres – with woods, meadows, formal gardens, trial gardens and a four-acre conservatory. There is always something wonderful to photo at Longwood Gardens. If we’re lucky, the tulips will still be on display when we visit during the workshop

Here are a few of the photos I’ve taken at Longwood in May.

On a recent trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania I spent some time photographing at the Central Market. Founded in 1730, Central Market is oldest continuously operated farmer’s market in the country! The market is currently housed in a Romanesque Revival style building constructed in 1889. Within the market, 65 vendors sell everything from meat to produce, flowers to baked goods, and everything in between. The market is open on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. If you’re in Lancaster, it’s well worth taking time out to visit the market (and get something to eat).

As I looked at the display at the Sweet Shop, I loved how the basked on the counter stood out from the shelf of treats behind it. I could just imagine a couple of little kids telling their Mom which candies they wanted her to buy them at the market.

Chanticleer Garden

I’ve had a few questions about some of the lesser-known gardens we’ll be visiting during my Photographing the Gardens of Philadelphia workshop in May.  so I thought I’d share a bit about some of them here in my newsletter in the coming weeks.

Chanticleer Garden, located in Wayne, Pennsylvania, was described by Garden Design Magazine as “America’s most inspiring garden.” Located on the estate of the Rosengarten family, Chanticleer became a public garden after the death of Adolph Rosengarten Jr in 1990. With terrace gardens, cutting gardens, wooded gardens and more, there is always something to photograph in the 35 acres open to the public at Chanticleer.

In May, we’re likely to find peonies, irises, wildflowers and more in bloom. Here are a few of my photos from Chanticleer to give you an idea of what we might see.

Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens

Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens

I’ve had a few questions about some of the lesser-known gardens we’ll be visiting during my Photographing the Gardens of Philadelphia workshop in May.  So I thought I’d share a bit about some of them here on my blog in the coming weeks.

Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens in an amazing peaceful oasis in the heart of Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park   Occupying only 1.2 acres, the gardens include beautiful landscapes hillsides, a waterfall, a koi pond, a traditional Japanese house and a tea house and garden. The site has been the home to Japanese buildings and landscaping dating back to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. For many years, it was the home of a Japanese Buddhist Temple Gate brought to the United States for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition. The house was built in Japan in 1953 when is was exhibited at Museum of Modern Art in New York. After the exhibition in New York, the house was moved to its current location.

In the spring, the gardens are filled with blossoming azaleas and dogwood. With any luck, they will be in bloom when we visit during the workshop.

Here are a few of my photographs from Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens to give you a sense of what we might see and photograph there in May

One of the lesser known gardens in Philadelphia is the Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens in West Fairmount Park which has a fascinating history. The house was built in Japan in 1953 when is was exhibited at Museum of Modern Art in New York. After the exhibition in New York, the house was moved to it’s current location in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park. The site has been the home to Japanese buildings and landscaping dating back to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. For many years, it was the home of a Japanese Buddhist Temple Gate brought to the United States for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition. The gardens currently occupy 1.2 acres, complete with hills, a koi pond, the house and a tea house.
On one of my visits, the azaleas were in bloom. I couldn’t resist photographing this peaceful scene of the azaleas, a waterfall, a couple of Japanese structures and the beautiful rocks and reflections.
